Junior Fell outing Potter tarn, Brunt Knott, Sat 16 Dec  Another great morning out for Helm Hill Juniors and parents.

Santa Dash 3 Dec - Helm Hill Juniors supported Rosemere Cancer Foundation, and took first (Ella Martindale), second (Joel Saunders) and third (Finley Grisedale) places into the bargain.

Helm Hill Awards evening on 24 Nov was the time when final standings in the club Junior Championship were announced and trophies awarded (see Races page on this website - Results panel). Whippet awards were given to six of our Juniors for their tenacious approach to training, and a new trophy this year went to Erin Bagge - the prestigious Ken Shuttleworth trophy which commemorates Founder member Ken's huge interest and support for young runners. Erin received the trophy for her consistent endeavour.

Arnside Knott race, 19 Nov - a good number of Juniors took part in this lovely, wooded race which has some great ascents and descents, and quite long courses for Juniors. As the last race of the 2017 club Junior Championship, it was an important event.

Cross country, and open fell trip The Cumbria cross country series is well underway; the third race was on Saturday 28 Oct, Hunter Hall school (Penrith) - results will soon be on the Cumbria Athletics facebook page, where results from the Cockermouth and Carlisle races are posted already. Then, on Sunday 29 Oct, the club junior fell trip went from White Moss to Silver How summit via a steep gully climb, looped along the tops (part of the Elterwater Winter League race route) to Dow Crag and back to White Moss. Juniors were sure-footed and gutsy on the rocks, bogs, ups and downs. It was a perfect day.

Wed 27 Sep ...dark and raining - great conditions for a spot of navigation on the Helm!

English Schools Fell Running Championship, Sun 24 Sep Many of our Juniors took part in this annual secondary schools event. The field of competitors is large in each Year group race and entrants come from far and wide, the courses are longer than many Junior fell races and the pressure is on as schools compete for individual positions, team standings and overall fell running school of the year. Results are HERE (note Sarah Smith's winning position in the Year 7 girl's race!) and more photos by Geoff Thompson are HERE

Grasmere sports - a day when Helm Hill runners Junior and Senior were taking part in practically every fell race category going. Plus we had several podium finishes in the Junior races; second girl U9s, second and third girl U12s, second girl U14s, second and third boy U17s. Some Helm Hill juniors aged over 17 on the day went into the Senior Guides race - well done to Martin Askew, Jacob Aubrey and Ben Kent who finished 21st, 23rd and 26th respectively in this most prestigious of fell races. Results HERE .

A busy Bank holiday weekend ... Had you been on the Howgills on Friday night, you would have found Helm Hill juniors enjoying themselves! Photos below taken on Arant Haw and Calf. Photo above taken at Coniston Gullies on Sunday - Results are HERE. Inbetween the Howgills and the Gullies, Saturday's Hutton roof races included several Helm Hill juniors. We are everywhere!

Helm Hill race night, Wed 17 May - a fab, friendly session on the glorious but always taxing setting of the Helm. Results are on the Races tab. More photos in the gallery. U17 Juniors mixed it with the Seniors.

Whernside Uphill Junior Championship Many thanks to the juniors, and their parents, who travelled to this race. Thanks to your participation we had representation in every age race plus we achieved high enough (eligible) placings in various age categories with three girls and three boys to win again the title of Junior FRA Uphill Champions. Well done to all who took part for your efforts in training, which pay off when tackling a race like this! Full results are on Wharfedale Harriers website.

Helm Junior Championship 2017 - Results - Please find a link to the club championship results so far, taking into account the first four races.

Sedbergh Sun 7 May was the first BOFRA race of the season. It's great to see juniors continuing their racing even 'though the Winter League has finished for this year ... BOFRA races are a great way to continue competing once the Winter League is over. Sedbergh race results are on the BOFRA website.

Sunday 30 April saw the culmination of a lot of sweat, speed, mud, rain, pain, stress and triumph as 2017 KWL participants collected their T-shirts, medals, chocolates and trophies. Special congratulations to those Helm juniors who made the top three placings in their categories; Clara Samson joint first U13 girls, Sarah Smith third U13 girls,      Ollie Sanders third U15 boys, Amy Slattery second U17 girls, Robert Askew first U17 boys. Also congratulations to Alicia Crawford, winner of the Junior Endeavour award.

Todd Cragg, Loughrigg, Anni Wa It was a busy week for Helm juniors, competing on Wednesday night in the Todd Cragg and Loughrigg races - RESULTS HERE - and the FRA championship Anni Wa races on Saturday. This photo, taken on Saturday, is courtesy of Dave Woodhead and there are many more on the Woodentops website. It is impressive at races to see our juniors putting in so much effort. Thank you to all the Seniors who watch and cheer as well. Both these races were Helm Hill junior club championship races... Remember; only 7 races need to be completed from the championship leaflet for a junior to gain their 2017 championship memento.

Helm Hill club championship 2017; see the Races tab on this website and scroll down to Junior Championship or Club Championship for the link to this year's club championship leaflet.

Junior Wednesday night training will recommence on the Helm on Wed 26 Apr and be followed on Sun 30 Apr by the Arant Haw non-points race and KWL presentation in the People's Hall, Sedbergh.

KWL Elterwater, Sun 9 Apr was the last points race in the series this year, when  the last remaining battles were finally decided.

West Nab, Sat 1 Apr was the second FRA Junior Championship race this year. Helm Hill juniors of all ages took part in the various race categories, having had fun finding the route in the first place! It certainly looped about! However, it was well-marshalled and all Helm Hill members were able to put in a really good effort on this trail-like course, then enjoy the well-earned goody bag afterwards. Well done EVERYONE who took part.

Lots happening! The Mid-Lancs cross country league finished this month, with Clara Samson 3rd U11 girl and Imogen Burrow 2nd U17 lady. This is testimony to a tremendous effort as these are taxing, fast-paced races. Sat 25 March was the National schools cross country (Years 4 -7) in which Cumbrian Year 6 girls - including some Helm runners of course - achieved second overall. Year 7 Cumbrian boys, including of course some Helm runners too, won the team prize. On the same day, as the Seniors lined up in the sunshine with a steep hill in front of them for their first FRA 2017 championship race, so did some Helm Juniors who had made the journey over to North Yorkshire. Below we see the start of the U17/19/21 race. Results of this race are on the Esk Valley club website but have not been checked by the FRA for runner eligibility.

Saturday 25 March - NOTE that the Hoad Hill race is postponed to later in the year, and no longer part of the Helm Hill Junior championship series. Meanwhile, the FRA Junior Championship race series begins on 25 March, with  Cock Howe; details HERE (see the documents in "Cock Howe Classics" panel). Remember U13 Juniors and older must have registered your proof with the FRA that you are First Claim Helm Hill in order to collect points for Helm in the FRA Junior Champs this year - contact the Junior Co-ordinator ASAP if you need any further info on this.

Inaugural Longsleddale KWL race, 19 March... slightly smaller fields of runners in each age category than we have seen at other KWL races; perhaps the heavy rain had something to do with that??! For those who have yet to race here 'though, there is a great course waiting for you - steep uphill, downhill, streams, mud, and a lovely setting. Put it in your diary for next year!

InterCounties cross-country 11 Mar, KWL Helm 12 Mar - it's been a busy weekend for our juniors, many of them racing in the Cumbria Athletics team on a fast and fairly flat course on Saturday against teams from elsewhere in Britain - results are on the British Athletics website HERE, plus there are VIDEOS - then following that with a very different course on Sunday...however, mud, effort and resilience were very evident on both days. Well done juniors for your application and dedication.

KWL Helm 12 Mar pictures have been added to the GALLERY. Pictured above are two Helm Hill U15s racing for the finish lane. (In total, 30 Helm Hill juniors raced on the Helm this Sunday :)  ). The photos below were taken at Cautley KWL. There are just two KWL races remaining this year; the battle is on for the final overall league table placings...Longsleddale on Sun 19 Mar, Elterwater on Sun 9th Apr.

22 April Anniversary Waltz Junior Race. Website is HERE - and open for pre-entries. Entry to this race is ONLY by pre-entry. Remember this is an FRA Championship race plus a Helm Hill club championship race, so an opportunity to score points for two things at once.

Cunswick Scar Sun 19 Feb - A very different type of route to the Barbon race last Sunday! Start of the U17s race is pictured below.

Whitestones KWL Sun 29 Jan ... number three in the series! and more great runs by our Juniors, with some Helm Hillers claiming a first place in their age category for the second time in the series. Also quite a few scratches and gorse bush thorns taken home! Here we see the U15s lining up.  Giggleswick KWL Sun 22 Jan - Well done Juniors of all ages ... another great big turn out from age 8 years through to the U23 category. More pictures are in the gallery

In 2015 it was Stuart, Tess, Tara and Evan who were together, as a family, awarded club colours. In 2016 Paul, Marcia (who unfortunately missed the photo opportunity), Fin and Islay were the family who received their colours together. Well done guys. Full details of club colours 2016 and previous years' colours are on the Honours tab of the Races page.

7 and 8 Jan  - A busy weekend for some juniors, who tackled both the Cumbria Cross Country championships on Saturday then Scout Scar on Sunday. Sunday saw a really big turn out of juniors - thank you and well done.
